[INT 003] Jameston Thieves Discusses Collabing With YOOKiE & Hybrid House

First catching Buygore’s eye with his collaboration with Nightowls in “Closer“, then again with YOOKiE & Swagglerock in “Get Down“, Jameston Thieves has been making his mark in the bass scene and we couldn’t help but notice. Crossing between bouncing bass-house to aggressive dubstep to more experimental trap and everything in-between, he continuously proves with each track that he’s one artist to not miss in 2016. We got to sit and talk about his upcoming EP with YOOKiE, titled Freshkimo, their inspiration, and his take on ‘hybrid house’.

FRESHKIMO Album Art1. Following the success of your Ty Dolla $ign remix of “Drop That Kitty” with YOOKiE, when did you guys decide you were going to collab again?

YOOKiE and I collaborated for the first time almost two years ago, with our tune, “Fourth Dimension.” Once we worked on that together, it was evident our styles meshed extremely well, and from there we began knocking out tunes together on the regular. In fact, we actually had been deep into many of the tunes from “Freshkimo” when we finished the Ty Dolla $ign remix. YOOKiE are amazing producers, and I think we’ve found a really cool process in where we can compliment each others style, and push each other out of our comfort zones and come up with some really cool and original music.

2. What is the story behind this new track?

“Xanax pancakes” probably has separate stories coming from each artist who worked on it. But, for me, it came to fruition when YOOKiE sent over the concept for “Xanax Pancakes” and my head surged with ideas and possibilities. I canceled all my plans for the day and stayed up all day/night working with it. Once we had the track fleshed out, we both knew it was something special, and sent it out to some other artists. Before we knew it, Bassnectar was playing it at some major shows, along with a ton of our friends, and we knew we had something special on our hands. At this point, we’d worked together on around 7 or 8 tunes, so the process was very comfortable.

3. You’ve got a hybrid house style going on – even though you avoid attaching yourself to a single genre, what are a few electronic or non-electronic genres that you feel you receive most of your inspiration from?

Although it may not be evident, I pull a lot of my inspiration from melodic punk / hardcore bands. Title fight , Seahaven , La Dispute, Etc. That whole scene of bands have really brought a degree of raw emotion and honesty to their music, and it has always inspired me to try to project my own essence with whatever art I put out into the world. I also love folk music, because it takes you on a journey. Personally, I guess, I gain creative inspiration more-so from the idea / intention of something rather than how it directly translates into my ears.

4. What were some of your favorite collabs that went down in 2015?

Ooof, that one is hard. I always have an absolute blast working with Dirty Doses on tunes, because they live 10 min away from me in Phoenix and we stay up all night writing music and drowning in Dos Equis. YOOKiE / Krumm / Treovr / Baewatch have been friends of mine for years, going back to our early days when all of us were cranking out Moombah and learning how to produce together on forums. Watching those relationships come full circle, and releasing music together that people listen to, and appreciate, is an unreal feeling. Infinite love to those dudes for sticking with the grind, and to everyone who gave our noises a chance.

5. What is 2016 looking like thus far (event-wise, collab-wise, any cool plans of your own)?

This past winter I assembled an awesome team, Shout out Vital Management, and Spin Agency. Wrote an EP, that contains music I’ve never been more proud of. And reached a deeper concept to my brand / artistic purpose that will be rolled out within this year. Along with Collabs with some of my favorite artists and friends, new artistic direction, lots of shows, and I could go on, but I’d rather you just come along for the journey.
